About Myself

Joanna Allen studied printed textiles at Manchester Polytechnic and graduated in 1983. Joanna has since worked mostly as a freelance artist and designer and has exhibited both in the UK and Milan, selling her floral watercolours to Donatella Versace and Gerolamo Etro, among others.

Much of Joanna's earlier work represents delicate floral still life and has been used extensively as greeting cards, prints and printed textiles. She produced tapestry needlepoint designs for Primavera, in addition to exclusive designs for the National Trust and the Royal Collection Enterprises.

Nowadays Joanna’s still life prints and paintings are bursting with colour and detail. Joanna enjoys exploring various techniques of intaglio printing, including etching, aquatint, but especially collograph. She uses a combination of materials to create each collograph plate including textured papers, foils and textiles, even using fragments of vintage fabrics and embroidery. In turn, Joanna’s recent paintings are influenced by collograph techniques, particularly the use of collage to create an interesting surface on which to work.

Although she uses wide range of media, Joanna finds she is drawn to the same recurring themes; her paintings and prints include imagery of flowers, gardens, quirky birds, and often incorporate cherished objects from her own collection of antique china and textiles.
